Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the right to contest specific decisions from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
