The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent awards ceremony approaches, one notices a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
