The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
