The English along with Welsh Pitted Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major early clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' surprise early exit.

Key Group Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a group once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 victory, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and top-ranked South Africa until the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the pools play out according to the current world rankings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from the likes of England and Ireland until the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at jump-start the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six group winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
