The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The buzz about this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team might be crafting a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be completed in diverse methods, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
