EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
