The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in September and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
